What is kingship?

When we look at the word ‘king’, our common understanding is that the word connotes a form of male monarchy, someone who rules for life. But Christ is more than what we would understand as a king, because if we see Christ as one, we would have missed out on the crux of seeing God as being one with us, and within us.

Most often, we see God as being the authority who exercises judgement on us. Yet, we need to remember that our Lord is also a shepherd who would leave the flock of sheep just to find the one missing sheep that is lost from the flock. A shepherd is one who protects, guides, or watches over a person or group of people. In doing so, a shepherd loves these people regardless of what these people do.

Even at our most difficult moments, and even in our most sinful moment, when we call out God’s name, Abba, Father, Yaweh, we are acknowledging God’s presence in our lives. We are also called to be one with God as He works within us. We are in His love, and He continues to guide us with His loving hands.

In celebrating the kingship of God over our lives, we are called into acceptance that our hands are God’s hands. What we create, will be what God’s creation. These creations will be beautiful creations made out of love because God is love.

We do have a choice in doing what we want. Judgement and hatred can be created from our hands. But to truly do God’s works, we need to be able to practise discernment too. We also need to call upon the Holy Spirit to help us to always remember the most important commandment from God, that of love. Loving ourselves as how God would love us, loving our neighbours as how we would love ourselves.

We are capable of judgement, but we do not have the authority to hold the final judgement as it is the shepherd who will decide which sheep to put on His left or right shoulders. Thus, to do the work of God, we need to always pray for God to shine His light upon us, that we would be able to do His will, to love the Kingdom of God.
